The NJ Parkway + The Garden State + Soccer led to The NJ Park(way) Rangers. The crest bringing those concepts of NJ and Park Rangers together where the shield was the shape of a face and the letters elude to facial features. This led to a kind of ‘green/nature’ idea based on the origin of the name “The Garden State'.
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the term “The Garden State” was used as a way to advertise farmland across the country to prospective farmers during the early to mid 1800’s. There are records of South Carolina calling itself the “Garden State” and Illinois referred to itself at one point as the “Garden State of the West.” But by the 1860’s, Hammonton, New Jersey had deemed itself the “Garden State of the East” and Vineland began advertising itself as the “Garden State of New Jersey.” Both towns are within the boundaries of New Jersey’s Pine Barrens. Nowadays NJ is known just as much for its manufacturing and it’s casinos. But in keeping with the original nature/green theme, the pattern is that of a forest of Pine trees using various illustrative/symbol representations.
The sash could be seen as the Parkway cutting through the Garden state it also has Scouts of America vibe.
The “whatexit" was something that Joe Piscopo coined on SNL. The question "What exit?" has become sort of an inside joke among New Jerseyans in reference to the never-ending New Jersey turnpike. Exit 88 the exit for the pine barons. When taken as a whole, the jersey also has a Scouts of America vibe
